Carmen

Versions: #1 #2 #3 #4 #5
Love is just like Twitter’s little bird
The affair will last just two days perhaps a third
First you get acquainted, then you start to follow
In no time you’ll go crazy, and then it’s all just hollow.

Look out for you
And for all those who “like” you
Plastic smiles are often nothing more than hashtags
Look out for you
Ah, my friends, buds and followers
You forget that it’s only just a number

Look out for you
If you like you
Look out for me
If I like me
Look out for us, look out for them, look out for you
Then you’re on your own
That’s how we show our love, love, love, love
How we squander life, life, life, life (1)
That’s how we show our love, love, love, love
How we squander life, life, life, life
That’s how we show our love, love, love, love
How we squander life, life, life, life
That’s how we show our love, love, love, love
How we squander life, life, life, life

Love is simply consumerism’s child
Always wanting more, more and more things for “moi”
Do you want your feelings to come from some store’s stockpile
Supply and demand the one and only law
Look out for you
“But I’m aware of the risks that come with it
I’ve got my receipt and if I have to, I’ll exchange it”
Look out for you
“And if I have to, I’ll take my revenge on it
This Raven, I’ll put him in a birdcage
and make him sing in it” (2)

[Refrain]

One day you buy it, and think its okay
Then you decry it, but still you have to pay
One day I guarantee, this life we will transcend (3)
But by then we’ll have come to a quite untimely end

Look out for you
If you like you
Look out for me
If I like me
Look out for us, look out for them, look out for you
Then you’re on your own
That’s how we show our love, love, love, love

Author’s comments:

I wanted to try to maintain some of the song’s rhyme and rhythm in my translation. Here’s what I came up with.

(1) As the other translations suggest, the word here in French is “consomme” = “consume” . A little poetic license to say that consuming is like squandering life.
(2) “Faire chanter” someone, making them sing in French, is also to bribe them.
(3) Here Stromae says we’ll love one another, which is rather enigmatic given the next line; I’m assuming caring for one another is a form of transcending the kind of life he’s just described.

Thanks! thanked 16 times

I literally created an account on this website to give you props for this translation!! I was trying to explain how AWESOME this song is to my mom who doesn’t speak French, and I was really struggling, so I just googled something and low and behold you have created a killer translation for it that wonderfully relayed both the lyrical genius and rhythm of the song. Nicely done Regular smile

I think you’ve done an excellent job here! More literal translations exist but you’ve totally succeeded in you aimi of maintaining some of the feel while keeping the overall meaning. Props 🙂
