A gulf in geography is a large bay that is an arm of an ocean or sea . Not all geological features which could be considered a gulf have “Gulf” in the name, for example the Bay of Bengal or Arabian Sea . [1] [2]

      As long as I’ve lived in southern California I’ve never heard the Sea of Cortez called the Gulf of California. I’m looking at a map on my wall and it is definitely labeled as Sea of Cortez…where did this other name coming from?

      Born and raised in Southern California and always heard it called Gulf of California — never referred to as Sea of Cortez, even though I know it has that name as well.

      Only textbooks seem to call it that. In Baja it’s the Mar de Cortez, never the Golfo de California—never heard it called that.
