I have never used any of the above mentioned services and i’m afraid of them, don’t know how you guys do it, but I can’t pay 51% + tax on an item I bought online.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, isn’t the purpose of all this to keep the dollar from falling since importing affects the JA dollar? But do the everyday local JA man buy enough online to affect the JA dollar? Grace, CPJ, Mega Mart, Lasco and all other big retailers, aren’t them the ones importing multi-millions of JA dollars worth of goods?

And I bet Grace etc, don’t pay these taxes.

This corrupt load a Sh1t we all have to deal with.

Items below USD$50 you pay a flat rate of JMD$500.

Items above USD$50 you pay a percentage based on the type of item. Things they categorize as "luxury items" get slapped with 80% the cost.

Sometimes a [email protected]$$ at customs will check the LOCAL PRICE of an item instead of the ONLINE PRICE or even the URL for the specific item you purchase (or your receipt) and then charge you based on the LOCAL PRICE. That will cause problems and hike your prices.

No you don’t pay anything once its under $50, there is a Customs Administration Fee that "may" be applied depending on the size of the item. Rule of thumb is anything under under 3 cubic feet should be exempt. But the CAF is $2500.

Some shipping companies are different. I only pay freight for items under USD$50 but I think at Mailpac there is an automatic JMD$500 charge plus freight. Mailpac is more granular with the how they charge freight meaning they will charge for 1.5lbs shipping but with Shipme if an Item weighs 1.1 they will apply freight charge for 2lbs which somehow works out cheaper than what Mailpac would charge for 2lbs

I see what you are saying. Maybe its a case of persons misinterpreting the freight forwarder’s cost as customs charges?

Well both companies have their shipping calculator but often it is just a guideline as it does not show the full cost you will pay.

So if your item costs 49.99 and shipping is $100 you pay no duty. I would recommend you do not take the risk with ShipMe however as I have been in store and heard them incorrectly advise customers.

I’ve been shipping goods for years and can tell you you’re mistaken here. Customs fees are charged on the total cost which includes shipping. Speaking from personal experience and in my opinion is illegal and unethical.

I got a package the other day, opened it only to find it had another package for someone else inside, so I called ShipMe advising them of what happened. Needless to say the tone of the call was more along the lines of (why yuh even bodda call juss tek di ting and gwaan nuh man) they asked me to bring the package back to which I respectfully said – no. come and get it from my office yourself if I had a pickup i would drop it off unfortunately I do not so send your bearer to collect it from my office – this was 2 weeks ago to this day no one has come for the item. Secondly I had an item listed as received at destination (meaning its at the airport) for 2 whole weeks before I got the item. So take that for what its worth. But there are times where they get me my item to Jamaica the same day they receive it in Miami – so its not all bad.

I’ve never used ShipMe however from what I have been told their rates are much more costly than the competition.

Items under $50 will attract the basic shipping fees as per the shipper, whether it’s ShipMe or whoever. Items are also charged according to weight. For further info visit the freight calculator on the Aeropost website.

Customs fees and shipping rates are two separate charges.

I’ve been using ShipMe for a couple months and its been great. I get an email when they get it in miami, and email when it reaches jamaica and another when its ready for pickup so I usually know exactly where my package is. They ship twice a week so if the item gets there by Wednesday you should get it by Saturday. If it gets there by Friday, you get it by Tuesday. Their charges are reasonable but I haven’t shipped anything large with them yet. But in general its roughly $700 per lb. Most of my shipments are under $50 so I don’t pay customs duty just the shipping cost. They also give you a PDF copy of your customs bill if its over $50 so u can see how Customs screwed you over.

I aslo love how efficient the pickup is. You can go there and see the line to the door and still get thru in 20mins because they have u sign in before u join the line so that ur item is ready when u reach the counter. So you just pay sign and leave.

Just to be clear, ever since I signed up with shipme from July 2014

The cost has always been as follows for Items under $50 and weight up to 1 lb.

Shipping Fee (Billable Weight: 1.00 lbs) $4.50 USD
    Processing Fee $1.50 USD
    Total $6.25

As Cyvan said, the experience is good
They also provide you with email as it relates to address changes and notification on closure time for holidays, just that the JM dollar keep sliding so we pay higher now than back then.

Just lately their attitude has changed, not liking the customer service since November last year.

Exactly, I echo your sentiments 100%. My latest ebay purchase was a projector, when you login to the website you see the item as ready for pickup – but i got no email. And come to think of it it also happened on the previous item I received I think them not having any annual fees is resulting in increased customer traffic which in turn may be having them feeling themselves a little.
